Thank you Boca Grande for your generosity

June 11, 2009
Gasparilla Gazette

January 19, 2008 was Dee Wheeler Day in Boca Grande. Hundreds were there to honor her that day for her thirty-two years of service to this island.

Dee, more than any one else, was responsible for instituting many of the programs at the community center that benefited the children of our community. Our Munchkin Preschool Program, the After School Program, and the Summer Camp Program became dear to her heart. She instituted, organized, and took part in all activities that had to do with our kids.

To insure that all of her work will be appropriately remembered, Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center established the Dee Wheeler Scholarship Fund. The cost of the programs mentioned above will be fully or partially offset by monies from this fund.

These stipends will be awarded to students who live on the island or students whose parents work full time on the island who demonstrate a need. A scholarship committee consisting of Friends board members, island residents, and Dee Wheeler will administer this program.

This year, because of your continued generosity, every child that applied for a scholarship received full tuition to one of the following programs: After School Program, Munchkins, Munchkin Summer Camp, or Traditional Summer Camp.

Thank you Boca Grande for your continued support of our children.
