Wildlife Encounters: Florida fire ants bring the heat

Fire ants black and red are capable of causing serious medical, agricultural and property damage. Fire ants display aggressive behavior particularly if the fire ant hill colony is disturbed. Invaders, including the unlucky child or barefoot stroller, are typically stung more than one time. When under attack, fire ants rush out of the mound en masse to repel the intruder. Being bitten by a fire ant is a stinging experience that feels like your skin is being burned — hence the name. It literally feels like being touched with a lit match. Fire ants inflict painful, burning pus-filled stings that result in intense itching and can cause infection if the pimple-like ant bite is broken. Allergic reactions to fire ant bites range from rashes and swelling to anaphylactic shock. In rare cases fire ant bites can cause death even to humans.

Rain showers can fill yards with red ants frantically trying to attach themselves to anything they can to escape drowning. Most grassy fields in Boca Grande and throughout the South now have red ant hills in places with trapped moisture nearby, which attracts fire ants.

Florida fire ants have a copper or reddish-brown color. They nest outside in dome-shaped colonies and will sting humans as well as animals. They also nest in air-conditioning units as well as water meter boxes. Tree trunks are another popular hiding place for red ants.

Fire ants are not picky eaters. They eat plants, insects, plant bulbs, fruit and grass as well as ground- nesting animals such a mice, turtles and snakes.

Fire ants would make great employees. They are highly organized and each one has a job they were to do. Some dig tunnels, others guard the mound. They enjoy sunshine but during hot weather will dig down deep into the soil seeking cooler temperatures and water.

To avoid the pain of red ant bites be aware of the surroundings and avoid walking near the colonies. Do not leave snacks out on countertop. This will attract ants directly to you.

Boca Grande's red fire ants are plentiful and extermination at this point is unlikely without concerted effort.
