22-year Charlotte cop dead at 50

Former Charlotte County Cpl. Charles D. “Chuck” Claus, 50 of Englewood, died Tuesday. He was born Aug. 20, 1960 in Washington, D.C. A former corporal in the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office who served for 22 years; he moved up the ranks and served on the Marine Patrol, Traffic, and other divisions. He moved from Virginia to Charlotte County in 1981 to be around family. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, boating and riding his motorcycle. His two favorite things to do off duty were to teach his grandson how to drive the golf cart and Jeep and to teach his dog, Harley, new tricks and commands. He also enjoyed watching science fiction and drinking diet Cokes.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he always enjoyed spending time with his family.

Claus is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cathy; son, Michael Claus (Blake Bettis); grandson, Michael Charles Jr.; mother Diane Claus; sisters, Susan (Hector) Flores and Cindy (Brian) Susko; and nieces and nephews, Ashley, Stephanie, Alex, Evan and Trey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles G. Claus.

A memorial service will be at Englewood United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11.
