Ovarian cancer claims beloved Englewood nurse

Karen Mary Ockers, 68, of Englewood lost her battle with ovarian cancer Saturday, Sept. 17 at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Born June 1, 1943, in Middlebury, Vt., to Stanley and Mary Ockers, she grew up in Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

After receiving her bachelor's degree from Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, she worked as a medical technologist in a private lab and later in hospitals at Venice, Tampa and Port Charlotte.

She loved fishing, going to the beach and traveling.

A generous person she gave food to the homeless through 4 Square Church on Langsner Street in Englewood.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Stanley T. and Zola Ockers of Lockport Ill.; nephews Jim Ockers and family of Dearborn Mich.; John Ockers of Chicago; and many loving cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Lemon Bay Funeral Home in Englewood at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that you give to your favorite charity for the needy.
