An 81-year-old Canadian shooting photos stepped into the path of a a pickup truck and was struck and killed at 5:05 p.m. Monday at 801 Gasparilla Road in Boca Grande.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported Eberhard Maczynski of Ontario, Canada, had just exited his vehicle parked on the west side of Gasparilla Road and was crossing the road to take photos of flowers when he stepped into the path of a northbound pickup truck driven by 19-year-old Terry Ogle of North Port.
Maczinski was en route to the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital via Med Flight when he succumbed to his injuries.
A traffic homicide detective with the Sheriff's Officehas assumed the investigation. Ogle has not been charged in the crash.
