Gasparilla Gazette

A deputy with the Lee County Sheriff's Office shot and killed an auto driver while conducting a traffic stop on southbound Interstate 75 in North Fort Myers at 7:19 p.m.Wednesday

The driver of a black, Dodge Caravan reportedly refused to stop and made several evasive maneuvers, including swerving the mini-van at the deputy. The pursuit ended when the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Cemetery Road and Stratton Road in Lee County.

Three individuals fled from the minivan but police caught Gregory Coleman, 24, of Lehigh Acres.

The driver, however, struggled with the deputy who initiated the traffic stop and both sustained gunshot wounds during the fight. The suspect died and the deputy is recovering in the hospital.

Major Crimes Unit has assumed the investigation.

The third occupant who fled the vehicle has not been located. The investigation continues.

An autopsy will be performed and the identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
