‘Mobile’ island home good deal for all sides

A 58-ton home is usually not mobile.

Thanks to a gift from one friend to another, with an assist from R.E. Johnson & Son Inc. of Parrish, there was an exception to the rule the first week in June.

Dave Keaser of Leo Pfliger said moving such a large house isn't difficult with the right equipment. The home was moved from 4510 45 St. on Boca Grande around the corner about one block to a vacant lot between 4546 and 4556 Shore Lane.

Kyle Johnson of R.E. Johnson & Sons Inc. of Parrish supervises a home being moved from 4510 45 St. on Boca Grande around the corner about one block to a vacant lot between 4546 and 45556 Shore Lane.

"It will set up on blocks there for about a month until we finish the foundation," Keaser said.

Preparation took four days culminating in a slow roll down out the driveway and down Shore Lane June 8.

Kyle Johnson, a fourth-generation contractor working with his father, Brett, for a house-moving company established in 1948, said the move will cost an estimated $22,000 - not including the cost of setting it on the new foundation.

Donating the home saved the former homeowner the cost of demolition to make way for a new residence to be built at 4510 45th St. The recipient receives an island home for less than $50,000
