The Island School relies on Gasparilla support

August 16, 2012
Gasparilla Gazette

To the Editor:

The Island School has 30 students registered at this time, and we receive approximately $6,200 in annual funding per student from Lee County.

The Island School would spend approximately $13,000 per student under full enrollment, but this year it will be closer to $17,000 because of fixed expenses that must be allocated to a smaller student count.

The budget deficit, which would occur at the current enrollment or at full enrollment (or any other level of enrollment for that matter) is filled by contributions to our Annual Fund from families and friends of TIS, proceeds from the Tarpon Ball, and support from The Island School Foundation.

In other words, Lee County provides less than half of our actual cost per student under any enrollment level. It is because of the incredible generosity of the Boca Grande community that our little school exists.
