Photo of the Week

August 17, 2012
Photo credit: Annette Dunson , Gasparilla Gazette

Grandson Isaac Dunson, visiting Gasparilla Gazette Nature Walk columnist William Dunson from his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah, came across the unusual sight of a baby gopher tortoise crossing a Palm Island road. The yellowish head and neck indicate a tortoise in its first year.

Gopher tortoises this small spend most of their time foraging or hiding from predators in dense bushes. Their shell is still soft and they are a bite-sized morsel for dogs, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, iguanas or anything able to grasp them in their mouths.
