Boating license classes are free

March 4, 2013
Gasparilla Gazette

Two Charlotte County Sheriff's Marine Patrol deputies taught a free boating safety course to 280 Lemon Bay High School students in Englewood.

Deputy First Class Greg Sutton and Cpl. David Stefanini taught students in teacher Kim Pinkham's health class.

Everyone born after Dec. 31, 1987, must to take an eight-hour boating safety course and pass a test to legally operate a boat in Florida. Those born before that date are grandfathered in.

"This information being taught for our students living in a waterfront community like Englewood, is invaluable," Pinkham said.

Students who pass a test receive a Safe Boating ID card from Tallahassee that must be carried while operating a boat in Florida waters.

To sign up for the free course, call (941) 575-5228.
