A horse stranded in the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Denaud in Hendry County was rescued Monday after boaters reported its plight to emergency personnel.
The horse was found on the north side of the river where the waterway dropped straight down 15 feet. The horse appeared exhausted from swimming in the river and it had to be lifted from where it was found with a frame and Haas lift up the steep river banks and onto solid ground.
Veterinary services where provided by Dr. Dennis Van Roekel.
The Region 6 Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue task force encompasses Lee, Hendry, Collier, Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota, Highlands, and Glades counties.
The responding team consisted of Lee, Collier, Charlotte and Hendry members along with Alva Fire Department and the LCSO Marine Unit.
