Lee County sheriffs vote to boot union — again

March 8, 2013
Gasparilla Gazette

For the second time in a row, sergeants of the Lee County Sheriff's Office have voted to decertify the International Union of Police Associations as their bargaining unit.

The vote to decertify was 46 to decertify, 24 against and 13 abstaining. The re-vote was ordered by the Public Employees Relations Commission but results mirror the July, 2012, vote when 65 percent voted to dissolve the union.

"By virtue of their rank, this particular group has been around the agency for a while and demonstrated great leadership abilities," said Sheriff Mike Scott. "Obviously, they considered all factors to this issue and have now twice made the decision to cast IUPA aside. It is a shame the union did not respect the decision of this group the first time around. The suggestion that their first vote to decertify was flawed has been answered in resounding fashion today."
