Gasparilla Gazette

The Boca Grande Historical Society enjoyed its traditional member appreciation Saturday, March 9, at the historic Teacherage House on the corner of Park Avenue and Banyan Street.

About 70 persons attended, including society officers and directors.

"It was nice to see new faces, along with long-time members and past board members," said Kimberly Kyle, BGHS executive director.

A variety of hors d'oeuvres prepared by board members and volunteers were served with wine.

Kyle said she owed a special thank you to Newlins Mainely Gourmet for preparing a New England clam chowder enjoyed by all.

Since its organization in 1995 the not-for-profit Boca Grande Historical Society Inc. has been dedicated to researching and preserving the history of Gasparilla Island and the surrounding Charlotte Harbor area.

Stop in at the museum to view exhibits, books on island-area history and browse the gift shop, which carries a selection of silver coins minted from the silver salvaged from sunken Spanish treasure ship, Nuestra Senora de Atocha.

The museum, located at 170 Park Ave., entrance in the back, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Admission is free. Call 964-1600.
