A healthy bobcat taken near Grande Preserve adjacent to Buck Creek illustrates that Gasparilla Island is surrounded by large wild cats that blend in well with modern civilization. Larger carnivores such as bears, cougars and wolves get eliminated by humans but mid-size carnivores such as bobcats and coyotes have adapted to suburban and sometimes even city life. Secretive bobcats find abundant small prey, enjoy a dish of dog food and even snack on domestic pets. Some find this frightening, but Gasparilla Gazette Nature Walk columnist William Dunson said he rejoices at the thought human domination has not eliminated all wild things from our surroundings
